Interactive Fiction Where Your Agency Is Real
Interactive fiction has always promised stories you shape. Maze AI keeps that promise with narration generated around your decisions instead of branches written before you arrived.
What is interactive fiction?
Interactive fiction is storytelling you participate in: prose delivers the world, and your decisions determine how the story unfolds. The form spans parser games, choice-based books, and — most recently — AI-narrated adventures like Maze AI, where the text itself is written in response to your play.
Adaptive AI narration vs. a prewritten branching tree
In a prewritten branching story, every path exists before you start; choosing means selecting which existing branch to reveal, and the tree has to end somewhere the author planned. Adaptive narration works differently: Maze AI generates the next scene from your choice, your character, and the story so far. There is no fixed map of branches to exhaust — the scenario supplies the premise and the stakes, and the path through them is produced during play.
That doesn't mean infinite or perfect — it means the story isn't limited to the branches someone had time to write, and custom actions get real responses instead of "that's not an option."
How Maze AI preserves agency without losing the plot
Total freedom with no stakes is a sandbox, not a story. Maze AI holds the two together through its scenarios: each one fixes a world, your role, and an objective — the things that make the story matter — while leaving how you pursue them open. InThe Locked Lighthouse you are always a storm-trapped investigator in Blackwater Light; whether you face the lamp room first, dig through the keeper's logbook, or answer the knocking is entirely yours. Your character state carries your history forward, so agency accumulates instead of resetting each scene.
