Cover art for the Maze AI scenario Gatebreaker

“The fortress gate cracks open for one breath, and someone inside screams your name.”

The premise

Blackbarrow is a fortress with one main road, one iron gate, and a yard full of prisoners waiting to be executed at dawn. You are the person the rescue party brought for one reason: when a gate will not open, you break it.

The problem is simple and brutal. The gate has cracked open for a few seconds, the prisoners can see freedom, and Commander Rusk is using them as shields from the wall above. If you rush, people may die in the arrows. If you wait, the gate may close and the executions begin.

Break through, keep your rescue party steady, and decide who gets saved first when every choice costs time, blood, or trust.

Who you are

You are a famous rebel gatebreaker returning to the fortress where your last assault failed and half your warband vanished behind the wall. You carry the breach-hammer that opened a dozen fortresses - and the guilt of every gate you opened too late.

Your objective

Breach Blackbarrow Gate, save the prisoners inside, and keep the rescue party from breaking under Commander Rusk's threats.

The kind of choices you'll face

A few illustrative examples — in play, choices are written for the exact situation you're in:

  • Charge the cracked gate before it closes again.
  • Face Commander Rusk and call his threat a bluff.
  • Send sappers toward the drainage culvert while you hold attention.

And when none of the options say what you actually want to do, write your own action — the story responds to it just the same.
